Homeowner, Condominium and Renters
Today's homeowner insurance has many features that allow
you to custom design a policy that is right for you. The
traditional homeowner’s program offers protection for
your home's structure, your personal property, as well as
liability safeguards in case you are held liable for etc.
If you own a Condo, your Association probably has a Master
Policy that insures the building and common areas collectively
owned by the unit owners. Since this includes the actual
structure of the unit, you would usually not need to pay
for this type of coverage. However, the Master Policy does
not cover your personal property or your legal responsibilities.
That's where condo insurance is needed.
Similarly, if you rent, your landlord probably has insured
your building, but not your personal possessions within your
apartment. Renters Insurance would protect your personal
property in the event of a loss.
Special Note:
Typically, a homeowner’s policy does not provide the
level of coverage you may need for fine arts, jewelry, furs,
silverware, or collectibles. You may need to schedule them
separately to adequately protect them.
Automobile
When it comes to auto insurance, there are some basic things
you need to know. Like the fact it is a statutory requirement
and that it can be expensive. There are four basic automobile
coverage’s: (1) liability, (2) medical payments, (3)
Uninsured/Underinsured motorist, and (4) damage to your vehicle.
The following should help you navigate through the particulars
of auto insurance.
Liability Coverage
Liability coverage offers protection against
claims, property damage, or bodily injury to a third party
that you or a member
of your household accidentally caused while driving your
car. This coverage applies only if the driver is considered
legally responsible for the damage.
Medical Payments
The Medical payments portion
of your policy assures that you; your family members, and
passengers in your car will
receive necessary medical and dental services resulting
from an auto accident-regardless of who caused the accident.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist
Uninsured
motorist coverage will pay for injury expenses incurred should
you, your family member, or passengers are
involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist.
Underinsured
motorist coverage comes into play when the other driver
is found legally responsible for an accident and has
coverage, but not enough to cover your injuries.
Physical Damage Coverage
There are
two types of physical damage coverage: (1) comprehensive
and (2) collision.
- Comprehensive coverage pays for most types
of damage to your car resulting from a loss other than collision.
Typical examples
include breakage of glass, falling objects, fire, theft,
windstorm, hail, water, flood, malicious mischief, vandalism,
or impact with an animal.
- Collision coverage pays for any
damage to your car caused by accidental impact with a vehicle
or object-or if your
vehicle overturns. The maximum amount to be paid is limited
to actual cash value of your vehicle, commonly referred
to as "blue book" value. Remember, the blue book
value is only a guide.
Umbrella
In today's environment, you can never tell when some small
action or oversight will lead to a lawsuit. Fighting
them can be awfully expensive, placing your personal
property
and assets at risk.
What if . . .
- Someone in your family forgets to turn off
the stove. The fire that results damages not only your
home, but
also others
in your neighborhood. This can lead to a potential
negligence suit.
- A homeowner's association board meeting concerns
a hotly contested educational issue. You attend, and
in voicing
your oppositions to one board member's action,
you make an impassioned
speech. Your words could lead to a potential slander
suit.
Personal Umbrella / Excess Liability
Personal Umbrella or Excess Liability coverage can provide
your entire household with a high limit of liability protection
over and above the insurance you are carrying for primary
auto, homeowner, boats and other personal insurance coverage’s.
And it is not as expensive as you might expect.
